This is a decent multimeter for the electrician and engine tech, with years of proven usage in the field. Though tailored to the automotive market, it also does standard electrical measurements well, with input ranges to include AC and DC voltage, AC and DC milliamps, DC amps, resistance, continuity, frequency and more.

This is an auto ranging multimeter, so you can simply select a given input with the dial and the meter will do the rest. Auto ranging is generally slower to display than an equivalent manual ranging version as it needs extra time to work out the right range. The 3340 is fairly timely, however.

NOTE: there may be fluctuations when it is sat idle due to the auto range. While this is quite normal due to ambient conditions, it will not affect any readings when put to work.

Function Buttons

There are four buttons for extra functions and to flit between ranges on a given input.

SEL (select)
Change between resistance, continuity, diode check and AC and DC milliamp ranges, as well as clamp current.

CYL (cylinder)

HOLD
Locks the current reading on screen.

MAX/MIN
Records a higher reading and lower reading for when the result is changing.

AUTO POWER OFF: the INNOVA 3340 has a useful auto off feature and will turn itself off after 10 minutes of sitting idle. This is useful for both extending battery life and the life of the meter.

ACCURACY

While not as accurate as a dedicated voltmeter – where DC voltage tends towards <±0.1% – it has many functions for the price and a decent level of accuracy for general purpose electrics.

Design / Build Quality

The INNOVA 3340 multimeter is strong and contoured and has a protective rubber boot. It feels sturdy to the touch and should stand up to the rigors of most garage setups. The nifty little probe lead holders on the side of the unit may give up after a while, but it also comes with a handy carry case. Most importantly, the batteries are accessed by a separate panel.

The dial has 16 input selector stations, not including two off positions. Mounted proud, it is ergonomically designed and easy to operate. The buttons on the 3340 provide extra functionality with some of the inputs, such as continuity and resistance, and AC / DC milliamps.

UL CERTIFIED
This meter has received the seal of approval on safety and quality from Underwriters Laboratories. This label is commonly seen on electrical tools and systems throughout the US and is a further mark of quality and peace of mind.

Display and Interface

The LCD display is a standard 3 3/4 digit (max 3999 displayed). It is clear and concise and shows all the symbols, such as low battery, AC/DC volts, current, ohms, degrees, dwell angle, temperature units, etc. When a reading goes over range, it will display ‘OL’, aside from DC amps.

Although the dial may seem quite complicated at first for non-electricians, it is clearly labeled and color coded. Furthermore, only resistance and milliamps have more than one function on their input position.

Protection

This strong meter is further protected by rubber corner guards to provide better impact resistance when dropped. It has 10MΩ input impedance, which helps protect electronics and engine control units under test. The milliamp input circuit is protected by a 500mA fuse, though the DC current input is un-fused. While you can test to 15A, the meter must be allowed to rest for 15 minutes or more for each 15-second test duration.
