Debian Manually Change User's Password
Changing User Passwords. To change a password on behalf of a user, first sign on or 'su' to the 'root' account. Then type, ``passwd user' (where user is the username for the password you are changing). The system will prompt you to enter a password. Passwords do not echo to the screen when you enter them. The new value of the user's password file comment field. The group ownership of files outside of the user's home directory must be fixed manually.-G. You must change the owner of any crontab files or at jobs manually. You must make any changes involving NIS on the NIS server.
