  • Pros

Excellent 5-GHz band throughput. Very good 2.4-GHz band throughput. Lots of features. Easy setup. Two USB ports for adding storage and printers. Improved design over last router series.
  • Cons

No LEDs associated with LAN ports. Must stand vertically. Problem fully uninstalling the software. Issues with managing attached USB devices.
  • Bottom Line

Belkin's N750 is the third fastest dual-band router we've tested. The router's speed is counterbalanced by some software issues.

Belkin's N750 Wireless Dual Band N+ Router ($129.99) has some improvements over the last Belkin router I reviewed, the Wireless Play Max Router. The N750 has much better throughput than the Play Max and is still well-stocked with features, plus it has a cool, unusual new look. On the other hand I don't like the fact that Belkin still insists on not equipping LAN ports with LEDs, making troubleshooting connectivity issues trickier. I also ran into some software issues while testing.

These problems unfortunately detract from the great strides in engineering made represented in the N750.

Design and Specs
Belkin has re-vamped its router design since the Play Max. The N750 is the oddest-looking router I've ever seen; one of my fellow analysts observed it resembled a shark's fin. The router stands upright, and the sides slightly bulge. The design does limit positioning of the router, which must stand upright–it can't be placed horizontally.

The Play Max's single large LED front panel is replaced on the N750 by a thinner LED—which indicates if the Internet connection is live. The front also houses a WPS setup button.

The chassis' look is not just a design whim. The shape supports multibeam antennas that maximize the MIMO sphere and coverage. The router's convex shape creates an apple-shaped pattern, as opposed to the traditional donut pattern emitted by most MIMO antennas.

According to Belkin, this design specifically orients and polarizes the multibeam antennas to provide coverage in all directions.

The N750 has a 3x3 antenna configuration, and it transmits on all three streams simultaneously. The router also has a hardware spec unfamiliar to me—hardware-based NAT. Network Address Translation is implemented in the core chipsets to enable faster NAT speeds. This hardware-based NAT feature seems to be Belkin's own proprietary technology, as I have not seen it in other routers. The rear panel has four Gigabit Ethernet ports a WAN port, two USB ports and a reset button.

Setup and Features
The Ethernet and power cables are already connected to the router when it ships. Also included is a card with the pre-configured SSID name, passphrase, and security type printed on it.

Belkin's Easy Start functionality is designed to get the router up and running in three easy steps. The router is quite easy to set up, but there are a few issues--not with the process itself, however. Rather, the problems come with the Belkin USB Print and Storage Center plug-in that's used to manage storage devices and printers that connect to the router.

The router ships with a CD that includes the Belkin Setup and Monitor program plus the user manual in PDF format (Belkin conveniently throws Adobe Reader onto the CD for viewing the manual). When you run setup, two plug-ins are also installed: the Belkin USB Print and Storage Center and a DLNA plugin, as well as the Router Monitor. Through the Monitor, you can access the router's settings (the Web GUI to the router), the user manual, and an app called Video mover which lets DLNA and UPnP devices access multimedia files from storage devices attached to the router.

The N750 has a strong feature set. Security options include 64- or 128-bit WEP and WPA/WPA2. It supports WMM, QoS and Wi-Fi Protected Setup. User can create a guest network and do one thing with guest networks not found in a lot of competing routers; create a 'Café Style' webpage which allows users to log into the router.

The N750 has an app called Video Mover that lets you smoothly stream media files to DLNA and UPnP supported equipment. What I don't understand is why I can access Video Mover from either the Belkin Router Monitor on the System Tray or from within the interface but I can only access the USB Print and Storage Center from the System Tray and not the interface?

The N750 also has a SPI firewall, port forwarding capabilities (called virtual servers in the interface), and DMZ creation and management features.

A self-healing utility is included in the interface. When enabled, it reinitializes the router at a user-specified schedule. This re-initialization involves a soft reboot, router-table cache clear and reset to the least crowded channel.

Testing Issues
My Internet connection dropped on the ISP's side (unfortunately, a common occurrence at a certain time of the day). Usually, when this happens, a reboot of the cable modem and router fixes everything once the connection is back up. The Belkin N750 refused to re-sync with the cable modem after two reboots. After a third time, leaving both the cable modem and N750 off for about two minutes, I had the router back up and running. Not a catastrophic glitch but irritating, nonetheless.

USB storage devices and printers attached to the router are managed through the Belkin USB and Print and Storage Center. I tested the wireless storage capabilities by attaching my 75 GB Cirago USB drive. It was correctly identified in the interface. You can easily setup a job to back up or restore files from your local machine to the USB storage. The Belkin software automatically creates mapped drives to the USB drives.

I then uploaded a 1.5 GB file from my local machine to the Cirago drive. In the middle of the upload process, the upload halted and I received this message on-screen: 'There is a problem accessing . Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.' Taking a look back into My Computer, I saw I had lost the drive mapping to the Cirago device. The Belkin USB Print and Storage Center did not detect any connected USB drives.

I removed the Cirago drive and attached a USB stick. The router still would not recognize that a device was attached.

Uninstalling the software proved also buggy. After testing the N750, my usual process is to remove all traces of a vendors' software so as not to cause a conflict with the next networking device I test. After uninstalling the Belkin Router Monitor, I attempted to uninstall 'Belkin USB Print and Storage Center' remaining in the list of installed apps. I clicked to uninstall and received the message, 'Please wait for program to finish uninstalling.' This after I received a message that the Router Monitor had been successfully removed.

I rebooted the machine. Sound of china guzheng user manual. This time, when I clicked on 'Belkin USB Print and Storage Center' to uninstall, I received the error, '_Setup64.dll cannot be found. Uninstallation will be stopped.'

Performance
What Belkin's N750 lacks in software, it makes up for in hardware. It gave some of the best performance results in both the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands, trailing only behind Netgear and Cisco Linksys.

Results at the 2.4 GHz band:

Results at 5 GHz:

Both bands saw very good numbers, but the 2.4-GHz band did not retain throughput as well as the Netgear N750 or some of the Cisco Linksys Routers at greater distance. The Belkin N750 did much better at 5 GHz, maintaining a strong signal at distance. Belkin's N750 ranks third in terms of throughput among the recent crop of dual-band routers I've tested.

Belkin Better, But Room for Improvement
Belkin has made much improvement with the N750 over the Play Max. It's a faster router and has a strong feature set. I am still leery of the software due to the uninstall issue, problem with the USB as well as the connectivity quirk I experienced.

The only reason to choose Belkin's N750 over Netgear's N750 or the Cisco E4200 would be: because you found a great deal for it online. It's also unique against competing routers because it has dual USB ports (the WNDR4000 and E4200 both only have one). Problem is though, the USB management software is lacking as I witnessed during testing. For now, I don't give the Belkin N750 as high marks as Netgear's WNDR4000 or the Cisco Linksys E4200.
