The YI Mirror Dash Cam provides two cameras that are front and a rear-facing (backup cam). The front camera is slightly better than the rear, but both provide good quality visuals. The front facing camera captures 138 degrees, 1080p resolution and 30 fps, and the rear facing camera captures 120 degrees with a 720p resolution. The rear camera covers less but is also less distorted. When the system detects reverse motion it switches the mirror display to show what the rear camera sees on the screen on the front facing camera. When the built-in gravity sensors are activated during an emergency, the camera backs up the current footage to prevent it from being lost in an accident. Most of these features are standard in most dash cameras in the current market but there are a few new features that differentiates this car camera system from the rest. The Yi Mirror Dash Cam has a ‘driver fatigue’ reminder. After driving a long distance and for a while, the camera alerts you of potential fatigue, making a safer experience for the user. This camera has a 4.3” touchscreen for users that want to interact with the interface easier. It also has a built-in 2.4GHz WiFi connection to download footage onto a cell phone through an app.

There is much more positive feedback than there is negative. Many say that the visual quality is great for the price. Like most dash cameras, night vision is worse than daytime but it still provides a pretty good quality. The rear camera also does not record in 1080p so the image is not as sharp but there is still rearview motion detection. The installation of the front camera is easy and can be done by almost anyone, but the company advises a professional to install the rear camera, especially if there was no existing setup there before. Some people may be able to do it with a little bit of handyman experience but most will probably want someone else to do it for them.

The issues with this camera are few and far between, especially for the price point. The rear camera could be better as it does not record in 1080p on the rear backup camera, so the image is not as sharp. It also has a narrower viewing angle than many dash cams. Some complain of a lot of noise on both cameras and it being foggy on rainy days. The rearview camera can be a bit blurry, especially at night. One of the major issues is screen glare. The camera doesn’t seem to have a great brightness adjustment system so it’s hard to see during the day and blinding at night. Size of the mirror is simply a personal preference, but shaky footage is a definite drawback, allow this may have been due to not properly securing the camera. Another issue many users had was difficulty finding their video files once they downloaded them onto their phone. The reason for this seems to be the file type but this is something to prepare for if you’re considering purchasing the camera.

Overall, this camera has mixed reviews. Yi is known for providing good quality cameras at excellent prices. They’re great at the fundamentals of a dash camera at any price: easy installation, good value for the money, great camera quality and good audio, an easy interface, and simple transfer of video files from the camera to a phone or a computer. They offer several other products with just as unique features as the Mirror Dash Camera. Yi is always trying to add new features to their cameras while maintaining a low price point. Things like the dual cameras, gravity sensors, and driver fatigue alerts are relatively new things that separate Yi from the competition. They are always thinking of the driver and what other things would benefit them and improve the driving experience. Unfortunately, they overlooked a few things. Shakiness and noise in recorded video is understandable, especially if the driver is recording in a noisy city or on an unkempt road. The largest issue is the glare and lack of a dimming option, which need to be fixed before anyone gets seriously hurt. Other than that, this is a stellar buy for a cheaper mirror dash camera and is well worth the money.
