Fellow techs,

I have a customer that has a Smith & Nephew 500XL that has an error message that says it is not recognizing the fiber optic cable.

Does anyone have any ideas why this happens and how to fix it?

ANY help or direction would be apprecaited.

Smith & Nephew is continuously working to improve our products so that we can bring the latest in new technology. We have recently received 510(k) clearance for a new and improved PICO. The new PICO 7 system has all the benefits of the older version, with some new upgrades, that will allow for enhanced ease of use and better patient satisfaction.1

  • The new pump is more than twice as effective at dealing with air leaks, than its predecessor.2
  • New user interface with a dressing full indicator optimizes dressing changes.
  • Area to write start date of therapy, may help with healthcare protocols.
  • Quiet just got even quieter – Our new pump is 25% quieter than our previous pump.3
  • New belt clip for greater patient portability.1
  • Package flexibility – we now offer our kits in 2 configurations – 1 pump with 2 dressings or 1 pump with 1 dressing. This allows clinicians to choose the kit that best meets their patients' needs. Available in all 10 dressing sizes.

PICO 7 Fluid Management Packs: Flexibility that makes a difference

  • Fluid Management Packs of 5 dressings now available.
  • ALL 10 dressing sizes available: (10x20cm, 10x30cm, 10x40cm, 15x15cm, 15x20cm, 15x30cm, 20x20cm, 25x25cm, small multisite, large multisite).
  • Provides the flexibility to tailor therapy to patient's clinical needs.
  • May help minimize waste and optimize dressing utilization.

Magnet warning

What is the magnet warning?

The PICO 7 pump contains a magnet that can cause other medical devices in close proximity to fail, leading to serious harm including death. The PICO 7 pump must be positioned at least 4” (10cm) away from other medical devices that could be affected by magnetic interference. These include but are not limited to:

  • Implantable Cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
  • Pacemakers
  • Insulin pumps
  • Shunt Valves
  • Neurostimulators
  • Cochlear Implants

Why does the PICO 7 device have this magnet?

Smith And Nephew 660hd User Manual

The magnet is integral to the new pump design that allows PICO 7 to move air more efficiently by using less power. The magnet enables the quiet operation of the device and by conserving energy helps facilitate a high tolerance to air leaks.4,5 Without the magnet, PICO 7 could not have the benefits listed below:

  • Efficiency1
  • Initial pump down
  • Maintenance pump down (7 days)
  • Dressing full indicator
  • Quieter pump2
  • 7 day timer

Can PICO 7 still be used by patients with any of these devices?

Smith And Nephew 660hd Service Manual

Yes – As long as the PICO 7 pump is positioned at least 4” (10cm) away from other medical devices, the PICO 7 device may be prescribed for use on patients with an active Implantable Medical Device (IMD) such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, shunt valve, neurostimulator, or cochlear implant. It is important the magnetism risk control measures, applicable to the device are clearly understood by users. Be sure that to consult the healthcare professional’s user manual prior to use.
