Google released Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Pixel phones and supported Nexus devices on October 4th. Since then, other Android manufacturers have also released the update to their devices either as beta software or fully stable releases.

A/B devices do not need space to download the update package because they can apply the update as they read it from the network; this is known as streaming A/B. For more information about OTA updates for A/B devices, see A/B (Seamless) System Updates. Nov 18, 2019  Today, Xiaomi officially started the Android 9 Pie beta program for Mi Box S Android TV platform. So download and install Android 9 Pie OTA update for Xiaomi Mi Box S. Yes, Xiaomi is now rolling out a beta update for the most popular Mi Box S. The Pie update now brings support for the Amazon Prime Video app.

While Sony was the first to put out Oreo update to its devices, HTC too recently released the update to its current flagship phone HTC U11 in Asia, Europe, and the US. Other big companies such as Samsung and LG have released Android 8.0 Oreo as a beta software to select people who volunteered to test drive the update, they should be able to deliver the update into the stable channel by year-end.

Also, while Android OEMs are working on bringing the Android 8.0 update to their devices, Google has released Android 8.1 Oreo update as well to its Pixel and supported Nexus devices. Android 8.1 brings several new cosmetic changes along with a few new useful APIs for the developers to build even better apps. The 2016 Pixel phones get most of the benefit with Android 8.1 as Google has provided the refreshing new UI from Pixel 2 to the 2016 Pixel phones with the update.

Whether device manufacturers would release the Android 8.1 update to their current devices is a question of faith because we have seen several OEMs entirely skip on incremental updates for devices which have been given the base update. Although, these manufacturers would release new devices in 2018 with Android 8.1 on-board but may not push the update to its current devices.

Anyway, we’re putting out this post to make it easier for you to download the Android 8.0 and 8.1 Oreo update for your device. Although you should receive Oreo update OTA when your device manufacturer releases it as a stable update, but in case you don’t receive the system update notification, or you cannot install the OTA because you’ve rooted your device, then it’s best to get the update by manually installing either the full firmware or the OTA zip file on your device.

All Android devices support flashing of OTA zip files through the stock recovery. Some devices allow you to install an update from the internal storage, while some require sideloading the OTA zip file through a PC. Either way, you can always install an update manually by getting the correct OTA zip file or full firmware for your device.

What’s the difference between full firmware file and an OTA zip? Well, an OTA update lets you keep your apps and data intact when you sideload it through the stock recovery. But full firmware files can only be installed if you’ve got the bootloader unlocked on your device since you’ve to flash the system image files manually through Fastboot mode. However, unlocking bootloader requires a full data wipe, so if you haven’t already unlocked the bootloader on your device, installing a full firmware file would mean complete loss of data.

For a long time, I’ve been hunting for the perfect cordcutting set-up. The dream has been a set-top box that has streaming apps, like YouTube and Netflix, but also can access the free OTA broadcast channels. It’s not hard to get these things separately. All you need is a set-top box, like the NVIDIA Shield TV, and an antenna. The (first world) problem is you have to switch inputs on your TV to switch between them.

I finally found the missing piece of the puzzle.

The device is the HDHomeRun by SiliconDust. It’s not a new product, but it has changed my life. The HDHomeRun connects to an antenna and sends out the OTA channels through your WiFi network. This means you can watch the channels on your Android TV, phones, tablets, and computer. The beauty of the HDHomeRun is its shocking simplicity. All you do is connect a few cables, install an app, and you’re watching free TV. So signing up required.

Picking the right HDHomeRun model

The HDHomeRun comes in three models: Connect, Extend, and Prime. You’ll want to make sure to get the one that will work the best with your current set-up. Basically, it depends on whether you want OTA channels or cable channels and the type of WiFi network you have. Check out the handy chart above to find the model for your situation. I’ll be using the Connect in this guide.

You also need an antenna

If you want the free OTA broadcast channels, you’ll need a TV antenna. I have the Mohu Leaf 50-mile range, but you can get a good antenna for as little as $15 on Amazon. Before buying an antenna, you should find out what channels are in range. Enter your address in the TV Fool tool and you’ll get a report. It will show you where the channels are broadcast from and how far away. Use that information to decide on an antenna and figure out where to place it in your house.

Set up the HDHomeRun

Setting up the HDHomeRun is a piece of cake. The only “set-up” is connecting the appropriate cables to the appropriate ports.

  1. Connect your antenna to the coaxial on the HDHomeRun
  2. Connect the HDHomeRun to your router with the ethernet cable
  3. Plug the HDHomeRun into a power outlet

That’s literally it. You don’t have to visit a website to enter a code, create an account, sign in, or any of that stuff. The OTA channels are now available on your home network. All you have to do is download an app to watch them.

Watch free TV on your Android devices

Android TV

If you have the NVIDIA SHIELD TV or Nexus Player on Android Nougat, you don’t even need to install an app to watch the channels. Everything can be done with the pre-installed Live Channels app.

  1. Open the Live Channels app
  2. You will be prompted to “Set up your sources”
  3. Network TV Tuner will be listed. Select Done
  4. Give permission to access your location
  5. That’s it!

This method also allows you to record live TV content. Recordings require a USB 3 hard drive with at least 50GB of storage. Simply select a future program from the guide to record it for later.

If you don’t like the Live Channels interface or you don’t have Android Nougat on your TV, you can use the HDHomeRun app.

  1. Download HDHomeRun – BETA from the Play Store
  2. Open the app
  3. That’s it!

Android phones & tablets

  3. That’s it!

Conclusion

I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve been hunting for the perfect cordcutting set-up for a long time. Way back in 2013, I bought this weird looking set-top box, which worked well until Samsung bought the company. I also tried this piece of crap. Is it hard to change the input to switch from TV to set-top box? No. /hidden-objects-free-download-for-android-tablet.html. But as a tech geek, I’m always searching for the perfect set-up. HDHomeRun allows me to achieve the dream.
