In May 2013 it was announced that Subhash Ghai is all set to remake 1983 version of the film Hero, which will be re-edited and re-written.[4] On 6 August 2013 it was announced that Nikhil Advani is all set to direct and re-write the script for the film, which Salman Khan is producing.[5] On 19 September 2013 news confirmed that Khan has announced to launch his own production house Salman Khan Productions, which will debut by producing the remake Hero film. On 7 January 2014 news revealed that Khan has set the film to start production on 18 February, and the film will be released on 12 December 2014.[6][7]

On 10 February 2014, it was reported that Ghai original director of the film has approved the script re-written by Advani and his co-writer Umesh Bist. Ghai said 'I think they've done a fantastic job of contemporising my script to suit today's tastes'. [8]

Casting[edit]

On 14 August 2013 news told that Govinda and Vinod Khanna will also star in the remake film.[9] On 25 October 2013 Ghai said 'Yes, Salman may make a special appearance but he will primarily be working as the producer of the film' [10] and he will be singing the title song of the film. On 9 February 2014 it was confirmed that Athiya Shetty will make her acting debut in the remake film opposite to Sooraj Pancholi.[11] Pancholi's father Aditya Pancholi, a lead actor of the 1980s and 1990s, was also cast in the film.

Aside from producing the film, Khan was also the editor.

Critical reception[edit]

Mohar Bash from Times of India gave 3* to the film stating that 'Sculpted as a full throttle masala entertainer, Hero is plot-heavy. And while you are well acquainted with the story, Nikhil and Salman's sensibility works as midas touch, giving the film a different texture. It is slick and never allows its viewers to feel restless. For its 132 minutes' crisp runtime.'

Bollywood Hungama gave 2/5* to the film stating that 'On the whole, HERO fails the litmus test of rehashing a classic for the Generation Next. It appeals in very small measures and is not an ideal weekend entertainer. If you a die-hard Salman Khan fan, you may want to patronise, else avoid.'

Koimoi gave 2.5/5* to the film stating that ' Hero is a complete throwback of the 'Ek Gunda Ek IG Ki Beti Se Kaise Pyaar Kar Sakta Hai' era. Nikhil Advani misses out on presenting a completely entertaining plot. All the elements seem scattered and hence there is neither enough romance nor action nor drama. The screenplay is a little hotchpotch and that is what affects the film badly.' Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN gave 2/5* stating that 'This is lazy, indifferent filmmaking, and a colossal bore for most of its running time. A video featuring Salman Khan singing the terrific title track at the end is too little too late. I'm going with two out of five.'

Indian express gave 0/5* to the film stating that 'This stale story is transported to 2015 for reasons best known to the filmmakers. If you are giving us a brand new pair, what is to stop you from giving us a brand new plot? And if you do have to remake that 80s show, why can't you do a better job?'

Martin D'souza from Glamsham gave 0/5* to the film stating that 'This film is just an extended promo for two star kids of the industry who have got the backing from Salman Khan, Subhash Ghai and Eros International; not necessarily in that order.'

Vishal Thakur of the Hindi daily Hindustan gave the film a 1.5/5 rating and criticised the film's plot and acting.[15]

Box office[edit]

The film netted 6.85 crore (US$990,000) on its opening day.[16]On its second day the film collected 6.62 crore (US$960,000) to take its two-day total to 13.50 crore (US$2.0 million).[17]Its first weekend collection stand at 21 crore (US$3.0 million).[18]On its fourth day the film collected 3.03 crore (US$440,000) nett.[19]The film collected 2.45 crore (US$350,000) on its fifth day of release.[20]The film collected around 30 crore (US$4.3 million) nett in its first week.[21]

Background[edit]

The song is composed by Sajid–Wajid and rendered by Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgade.[2]

The producers of the film capitulating on the popularity of the song 'Palat – Tera Hero Idhar Hai' from the soundtrack attached a remix version of it along with the theatrical prints of Ragini MMS 2 which released on 21 March 2014—instead of the theatrical trailer—marking the first such instance.[3][4] Some critics compared the track, 'Palat – Tera Hero Idhar Hai' to the 1981 song, 'Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar Hai' from the soundtrack of the film, Kaalia.[5][6]Delta radial arm saw user manual. Talking about the resemblance, Sajid stated: 'I won't deny any influence in our work, but I am not sure to what extent it goes'. According to him the lyrics and the vibe of the song are similar, though the tune is different.[7] The song was talked for its similarity with many tracks performed by Govinda.[8]

The song is directed by David Dhawan who is contributed by his elder son, Rohit. The lyrics of the song is penned by Kumaar who stated; ' To crack this very simple yet catchy and populist vibe is hard, and I don't understand the game of hits and flops'.[9] Additional lyrics of the song is penned by Danish Sabri.[10] Since the song required Dhawan to involve a lot of heavy duty steps on the ground with body weight balanced on the hands solely and to avoid any injuries to his wrist and hand, he suggested wearing biker's gloves.[11]

The promotional released music video features, Nargis Fakhri through various snippets from the film and songs like 'Galat Baat Hai' and 'Shanivaar Raat'. However the video used in the movie, features Varun Dhawan and Ileana D'Cruz with no frames of Fakhri. In the music video of the song, he dances in the middle of a basketball court, on a wall and even while hanging from an artificial climbing rockface.[12] The song starts as Dhawan tries wooing Ileana on a college campus who is then accompanied by a bunch of guys, showing some Bollywood dance moves.[10]

Release and response[edit]

Tera

A 15-second teaser of the song was released on YouTube handle of T-Series, on 26 February 2014.[13] The promotional music video of the song was uploaded on 28 February 2014.[14] The full version of the audio track was released digitally on 3 March 2014, in the soundtrack of the album.[15][16]

Talking about the popularity of the song, Ileana D'Cruz said; 'Songs are such an important part of the film. I am very happy and surprised that 'Palat' became a big hit'.[17] Regarding the success of the song, Varun Dhawan commented: 'While promoting the film in various cities, I was inundated with requests to dance on Palat. In Indore, when we asked the crowd to select a track, this song was the unanimous choice. They went berserk when it was played'.[18]

Critical reception[edit]

Joginder Tuteja from Rediff.com felt the song has 'catchy beats and a foot-tapping rhythm', calling it as 'the height of the masala score'.[19] Devesh Sharma from Filmfare talked about the resemblance of the song with the RD Burman's composition and commented: 'Singh sings it in full Kishore Kumar mode and you can’t help but smile at the nostalgic feel that it provides as well[clarification needed] is own comic resonance'.[20]Bollywood Hungama's Rajiv Vijayakar called Arijit Singh a 'revelation', who further stated: 'This is terrain he has never been visualized in before, and the singer shines'.[21]
