Often, one communication port is occupied by the Smart PV Inverters, the other one by a Power Meter and perhaps we are in the situation when only one communication port is available.
If we want to connect many EMI devices (Eg. pyranometers) and only one RS485 communication port is available is important to know that we can connect all these devices on the same COM Port. A maximum of 5 devices can be connect through this method.
Find below all the conditions that should be accomplished in order to succeed with this operation:
User Manual For Smart Watch
Step 1
Be sure that all devices have different addresses - usually, EMI comes by default with '1' as address. In order to connect many devices on the same communication port, this address should be different for all devices. Otherwise we would face a conflict address. If you are in the purchasing step please tell the EMI's provider that you need different addresses for all these devices. If you have already purchased these devices, contact their provider and ask about the address change tool;
Step 2
Be sure that all devices have the same baud rate - usually, baud rate for EMI devices is 19200;
Step 3
Be sure that your Smart Logger 1000 has a firmware version newer or equal to SPC115 - if your firmware version is older than SPC115, please contact [email protected]. We will help you immediately to upgrade your device;
Step 4
Connect all the pyranometers in the daisy chain with the RS485 communication;
Step 5
Add all these devices through WEB-Ui (Smart Logger Interface).

Problem:
On site in Thailand, when we connected a Smartloggert1000 to a weather station, we found that it is not a simple plug and play process like other devices that are on the pre-integrated list inside the smart logger.
Problem Analysis:
If we use an Environmental Monitoring Instrument (EMI) device that is not on the pre-integrated list, the set up needs to be completed manually. The parameters for the device need to be checked from the Installation manual, and each of the Modbus registers must be mapped with the correct addresses in the smart logger set up page. EMI devices from different suppliers can support different protocols, hence it is important to check for the communications protocol first before ordering. Better yet, it should be checked with Huawei on EMI device brand first to avoid issues later. Often there are brands that have the supported protocol but has known issues with compatibility. Also, device address and port must be checked carefully and accordingly before setting up the device on the Smart Logger.
Cause:
The configuration of the Modbus address and baud rate was not correct, and the weather station or EMI device was not set up also by a local PC prior to connection set up with the Smart Logger. Some weather stations require a pre-setup of configuration to select the correct communication protocol and addressing beforehand.
Solution:
Through WebUI, login on the Smart Logger as “Advanced User”, where the default password is “Changeme”. First, to set the communication parameters, go to “Settings” from the main menu and click “RS485” under the “Comm. Param.” section. Then, choose Protocol ‘Modbus” and Parity “Even Parity”, where the baud rate is set to “19200” for RS485. Note that the baud rates at the EMI device and Smart Logger must be the same. Secondly, after the communication parameters for the EMI has been set, the device must be added manually in Smart Logger in “Connect Device” section under the main menu “Maintenance”. Add Device Page will pop up. “EMI” needs to be selected from the drop down menu and choose the Port Number to which port the EMI unit is connected. Afterwards, click “Add Device”. Since the EMI is not on the standard devices list pre-integrated in the Smart Logger, it will not be displayed on the drop-down list on the Running Parameter page. On the main menu, go to “Monitoring” and select “EMI” section. Under Running Parameter on EMI model, select “Other”. The signal address and other parameters need to be set from the EMI manual. Lastly, click “submit” for completing connecting the EMI to the Smart Logger. Note: In case of very long RS-485 cable runs, the baud rates of the smart logger and EMI may need to be changed to a lower value, and the signal quality decreases with increasing length.
