He is a Hamilton Beach digital steamer and after this initial run, I have a feeling we are going to be fast friends. He supposedly can steam whole potatoes, many if not all veggies like whole cobs of corn, hard boiled eggs, and meat. You just add water, fill the trays and let ’em do his sexy business.
Tonight I steamed a whole head of cauliflower, about a cup of leftover broccoli florets, and 1/2 bag of Trader Joe’s pre-washed sliced kale. We kept everything oil-free which is part of the beauty of it. You can add seasoning etc before steaming but I didn’t for this first run.
I let it run on the full 20 minute cycle but I’m pretty sure you can dial it down if wanted or if something is not cooked to your taste. The manual doesn’t give any recipe tips. There is a measly list of veggies and sizes that it ‘can’ steam so I really hope to supplement that here with successes and failures of different steaming options.
I’ll admit I was a little worried about the kale, because raw kale is pretty amazing. Also, it didn’t have kale on the list or cauliflower for that matter but cauliflower and broccoli are pretty synonymous.
Imagine my surprise when 20 minutes later the kale had retained this beautiful vibrant green color.
This was delicious and you could really add any seasoning your up for …. even a splash of sriracha.
A New Kitchen Toy and a Delicious Steamed Dinner
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cauliflower, bottom of stem removed, chopped into larger florets
- 1 cup broccoli florets (optional), we just had these laying around
- 8-12 cups chopped kale (stems included, we did)
- tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons feta (optional)
- juice of 1/2 lemon
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon curry seasoning
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 slice of bread or lettuce or raw bread
- dab of veganaise or cashew chive dip
- tomato
- mixed greens
Instructions
- Fill the water reservoir to the max line and add the large cauliflower and broccoli florets to the bottom container. Fill the top container with the kale and place the lid on.
- Press the cook time button and let steam for 20 minutes - this was my default setting.
- After 20 minutes, turn the steamer off and carefully remove the trays. Empty the kale into a large bowl and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper and juice of half a lemon.
- Cut the cauliflower, broccoli, and tomato into smaller bite sized pieces and add to the kale. Toss with curry seasoning and feta and serve.
- The sandwich was super easy, a slice of bread, dabbed with veganaise and topped with lettuce, sprouts, tomatoes, and a little salt and pepper.
The veggies made about 4 servings if you fill half your plate ‘heaping style’ like us.
I can’t wait to try all the other veggies. I think this will be really handy in winter when something warm is called for.
